Kid’s Yoga and Multiple Intelligence

Have you ever noticed that some people are good in math, some are good at writing and speaking, some are athletically talented, some are musically gifted, some are in tune with nature, or themselves, and some people have great interpersonal skills? Maybe you are strong in one of these areas, and feel weak in others. These are known at Multiple Intelligences. In 1983, Harvard Professor Howard Gardner developed his now famous theory of Multiple Intelligence, which defines intelligence far beyond what an IQ test can tell you.

Our education system regards math and verbal intelligence very highly, and basically ignores the other ways of learning that may be stronger in some children. Teachers know that children learn in many different ways, and good teachers seek to teach the whole child. This is why Art, Music, and Physical Education are so important for a complete educational experience that reaches every child.

Young at Heart Yoga for Kids classes incorporate these 8 areas as well. Every class has a theme, usually a book that helps set the theme. Music adds to the theme, through patterns, rhythms, and repetition. Counting and other activities speak to the mathematically talented. Looking at and copying the teacher’s pose takes visual-spatial and kinesthetic awareness. Many yoga classes include animals, nature, and environmental awareness. Finally, yoga gives us tools to listen to our bodies and regulate our emotions, while learning to co-operate and make connections with others. Yoga can really teach the whole child!
